PROJECTS (Samples)
CANADIAN FOREST
PRODUCTS LTD. - Research & Development Centre, VANCOUVER, B.C.
Control System Integrator services for specialized
CANFOR R&D machinery to process dimensional lumber. The
control system consisted of an A-B ControlLogix 5550 and an A-B ControlLogix
5555 PLC processor with discrete I/O and 2-Axis Servo Modules for Servo
Motor Control. The PLC programming was completed on RSLogix ControlLogix
5000 PLC programming software. Process data for the two ControlLogix controllers
was transfered via TCP/IP Ethernet protocol from a Custom CANFOR R&D
board scanner system.
INTERNATIONAL FOREST PRODUCTS LTD. - Acorn Forest
Products Div., DELTA, B.C.
Control System Integrator services for a new Tilt-Hoist
(Board Unstacker) and Stick Recovery System. The project included PLC
control system design and PLC programming. The sawmill machinery consisted
of Infeed Transfer Decks, automated Tilt-Hoist , variable and fix speed
Transer Decks, Conveyors, Stick Unscrambler and Stick Cart Conveyor. The
PLC programming was completed on RSLogix ControlLogix 5 PLC programming
software.
TOLKO INDUSTRIES LTD. - Manitoba Solid Wood Division,
THE PAS, MANITOBA
Control System Integrator services for an $80M Sawmill
Modernization Project . The project included PLC control system design
including Operator Booths, Consoles, PLC programming and Commissioning.
The sawmill machinery consisted of Infeed Transfer Decks, Log Barkers,
Variable Speed Conveyors, Transfer Decks, and Residual conveyors. The
control system consisted of four A-B PLC5/40 processors (one for each
Debarker Line) and one PLC5/40 processor for all Residual conveyors within
the mill. IPA Inc. also provided System Integration services for customization
and alterations to existing Canter Line machinery as required by the mill.

NORTHLAND FOREST PRODUCTS LTD., FORT McMURRAY,
ALBERTA
Control System Integrator services for a new $40M Sawmill.
The project included PLC control system design and PLC/HMI programming.
The sawmill machinery consisted of Log Barkers, Variable Speed Conveyors,
Cut-Off-Saws, Transfer Decks, and Residual conveyors. The control system
consisted of two A-B PLC5/40E processors (one for each bucking line) and
one PLC5/20 processor for all Residual conveyors within the mill. The
two very modern bucking lines were optimized for maximum product yield
by two Nanoose Profiler Laser Scanners and Nanoose optimization software.
The operator interface was via several local and remote push-button consoles
and four A-B PanelView 1400e and one A-B PanelView 900 graphics computers.
GWIL INDUSTRIES INC. - Plastics Division, WINFIELD,
B.C.
Electrical, Controls, Instrumentation and Process engineering
services for a new $18M Fiberglass Resin Plant Expansion. Electrical design
included; a Unit Substation, MCCs', PF correction, Genset, cabling, tray,
etc.. Controls included the complete design of a Modicon Quantum PLC control
system with approximately 2000 analog and digital I/O devices. Instrumentation
included specifications for all field devices from control valves, mass
flow meters, scales, temperature and pressure transmitters, through to
chemical analyzers for a hazardous Class 1 & 2, Division 1 & 2 environment.
Provided Process-consulting services to the process engineers through
out the design and construction of the project.
ALCAN SMELTERS AND CHEMICALS LTD., KITIMAT, B.C.
Designed three independent GE 90-70 PLC control systems
(Relay control panel replacement) for three Aluminum Dry Scrubbers. The
Aluminum Dry Scrubber systems performed pot-line gas removal, material
recovery and environmental emission control. The PLC control systems included
both local rack mounted I/O modules and remote Genius I/O blocks. These
control systems were interfaced together through a Fiber Optic Genius
LAN Network to three Cimplicity 3000W industrial graphic computers. The
Cimplicity 3000Ws' provided full monitoring and control ability over all
three Dry Scrubber systems. This project was followed by the successful
completion of the Dry Scrubber Interconnect (Wet Scrubber removal) for
Pot-Lines 3, 4, and 5. The Dry Scrubber Interconnect project was successfully
commissioned utilizing a primary Master PLC and a hot back-up secondary
Master PLC control strategy.
MOLSON BREWERY, VANCOUVER, B.C.
Designed an Allen-Bradley PLC5/25 control system with
1700+ I/O devices. This control system automated a beer bottling line,
which included bottle conveyors, washers, fillers, pasteurizer, labelers,
packers and palletizers. The A-B PLC software included all machine control
logic as well as PID closed loop temperature control for the 9-zone pasteurizer.
STROJIMPORT FOREIGN TRADE CO., CZECHOSLOVAKIA
Designed an Allen-Bradley PLC5/15 control system for
sawmill machinery. The sawmill machinery included a Dual Log Unscrambler,
a Sharpchain with a Reducer Quad Bandmill, Transfer Decks, and a Double
Arbor Circular Reducer Gang. The Sharpchain was equipped with a KCCD 906
laser scanner and computer system that was interfaced to a Multibus Setworks
Computer. The laser scanner and computers optimized lumber yield from
non-uniform logs. The design also included an operator cab and consoles,
sheet metal drawings, electrical schematics, PLC programming and closed
circuit TV specifications.
MAYO FOREST PRODUCTS LTD., NANAIMO, B.C.
Designed a GE Series One Plus PLC control system for
a Vertical Twin Resaw. This control system used a PLC ASCII/BASIC Module
to interface the PLC CPU to a Multibus Setworks Computer and a Kita Laser
Positioning Computer. The interface was accomplished over a serial hardware
link and a custom protocol communication program in the ASCII/BASIC Module.
The design also included electrical schematics, console details, PLC programming
and documentation.
